Day One of Bluesfest was a short one for me as I arrived into Byron just in time to catch only two acts, Old Man River and Jack Johnson. As I recalled from previous occaisions, Old Man River was much more fun to shoot on the smaller stage, before Jack Johnon and his rather uninspiring performance took the main stage.

After photographing Amanda Palmer’s impromptu ninja gig this afternoon, I headed down to the Zoo for Amanda’s more ‘promptu’ gig (as stated by support act Mikelangelo).

Amanda was supported by Mikelangelo, a guest also who was along for the ride on her Ninja show. Mikelangelo sang an interesting early Tex Perkin’s cover with lyrics along the lines of “I like men with erections”. Entertaining.

This afternoon I went along and photographed the first half of Amanda Palmer’s roving Ninja gig. At 4pm she started at Voodoo Lulu in the Valley.  Unfortunately I couldn’t stick around, but at 5pm her and the audience were parading up to IMA for the second half of the gig (which will be finishing any second now).

I’m off to photograph her tonight at The Zoo for Rave magazine. Should be a fun gig.

Montpelier launched their new self-titled EP on Friday night to a virtually sold out show. The energy was high, people were singing along, the boys looked humble and blown away on stage.

Photos taken for Mess and Noise

First up was support band Leader Cheeter, with a rather photogenic guitarist.

Then Cloud Control took to the stage in a rather sweltering and packed out Troubador. I was able to shoot for only the first half of the set as after that the crowd became too raucous, dancing around with the floor of the Troubadour bouncing too much to shoot at my 1/50 sec.

I had a lot of fun shooting John Steel Singers on Saturday night. It was the first time I had been inside, let alone shot a gig at Old Museum. I last saw John Steel Singers perform at Fire and Flood, and damn they keep getting better. I had had a big day at home and was only really meant to shoot the first few songs but their performance was so captivating that I found myself shooting right up until the last song.
