It is that time of the year again, the Queensland Poetry Festival. I think this year is my 5th year photographing the festival and as my longest standing clients I always enjoy this time of the year. Not only do the words of the poets inspire me but I also see it as a benchmark to measure how far I have come and what I still want to achieve in the next coming year. The poets and friends of the Queensland Poetry Festival have become more then just familiar faces as the years have gone on. Shooting the Queensland Poetry Festival each year has led to some amazing opportunities, namely photographing the weddings of some of the board members.

This year my Splendour in the Grass festival saw me mainly backstage assisting Dan Boud in the FasterLouder studio. As I knew I wouldn’t have much time to actually shoot much myself I decided to head to the festival grounds a day early so that I could have a full day shooting my own photos. I decided to undertake two projects at Splendour this year, the first being a timelapse of my whole festival experience (video to come soon) plus portraits of the punters at the festival. I spent the afternoon of the Thursday walking through the festival and campsite taking photos of interesting people I saw.

On Friday I was asked to help Sydney based photographer Dan Boud in covering the Brisbane leg of the St Jerome’s Laneway festival. My job was to second shoot, basically trying to catch many of the same artists that Dan was shooting but from a different angle. And also to cover bands that clashed in the timetable.

The day started off incredibly hot, which left most photographers quite drained. Highlights from the day photograhically were !!! (pictured above), Les Savy Fav (who’s reputation for his dynamic and crazy live performances has quickly spread around the country) and personal favourites Holy F*@k and the Jezabels (who I made a point of staying and watching the whole set of).

No Sleep Til, what can I say. The first shoot of my summer festivals and it definitely left me and my cameras a little battered and bruised. Even though this shoot was the first of the SUMMER festival season with the weather it definitely felt like a festival not dissimilar to the weather produced by the mid-year Splendour festival. A lot raining and a little bit cold, considering to throw on a scarf to shoot this festival was definitely not something that felt at home in December.

Day One of Bluesfest was a short one for me as I arrived into Byron just in time to catch only two acts, Old Man River and Jack Johnson. As I recalled from previous occaisions, Old Man River was much more fun to shoot on the smaller stage, before Jack Johnon and his rather uninspiring performance took the main stage.
